Domaine. The money earned by distributing some of the world’s most sought-after wines around the world through his company Vinifera, has enabled Fabien Duperray to realise his dream of producing the greatest possible Beaujolais wines from a viticulture as demanding as that of Lalou Bize-Leroy, his role model. He believes – and we share his view – that the crus’ best terroirs have the same potential as the world’s greatest terroirs, and that Gamay is ideally suited to them. This does not exclude the utmost precision and control in vinification and, above all, the absence of any input that would disturb their expression. The barrel ageing of his first vintages has been abandoned, and everything is aged in stainless steel vats, but with constant adjustment of the oxygen and the minimum necessary SO2 protection. With almost ten years of biodynamic viticulture under his belt, his latest vintages have reached a truly unique elegance and charm that justifies placing his estate among the finest in France. If you’re lucky enough to have access to them, give them the ageing time they need to blossom and, of course, the care they need to be served. The 2022s still being matured impressed us. B+D
