Domaine La Cendrillon, in the Languedoc, tells the story of the Joyeux family, who for eight generations have cultivated a distinctive vision of great Corbières wines from their beautiful terroir in Lézignan. La Cendrillon, joy in the Corbières.
AS IF STRAIGHT OUT OF A FAIRY TALE
The charming name “Cendrillon” refers to the lieu-dit where the Joyeux family has been established since 1750. Like many Languedoc landowners, they have had to seek sources of income beyond wine over the generations. Hubert Joyeux’s grandfather was a renowned surgeon in Montpellier, and his father, Robert, managed the railway operations of the well-known Faiveley family from Burgundy. Just a few kilometers from Fontfroide Abbey, in the heart of the Corbières, Domaine La Cendrillon long struggled along, suffering from a lack of investment.
At the turn of the millennium, two options became clear: sell or take matters into their own hands. Deeply attached to this family property, Robert could not bring himself to sell. He chose instead to devote significant resources to replanting vineyards, restoring the cellar roof that was on the verge of collapse, and equipping the estate with the most modern winemaking facilities. What was also needed was someone to lead the challenge. His son Hubert, freshly graduated from business school, first took over the commercial direction of the estate in 2017 before assuming full control of the entire property—42 hectares in total, including a superb 22-hectare block surrounding the winery.
A visionary, Robert Joyeux liked to stay one step ahead. Early on, he recognized the consequences of climate change and did not hesitate to introduce grape varieties suited to the Mediterranean climate such as Albariño, Verdejo, and Nielluccio. The vines have been farmed organically for twenty years—well before such practices became widespread in the Languedoc.
BETWEEN GRANITE AND PEBBLES
Set on the terraces of Lézignan, La Cendrillon’s terroir offers magnificent views over the region. The backbone of the estate, a Jurassic granite outcrop, benefits from a dual exposure. To the south, deep soils promote slow ripening of the grape varieties. To the north, cooler limestone or schist soils preserve acidity and aromatic freshness—the holy grail in the Languedoc.
Ancient alluvial terraces scattered with rolled pebbles also store heat while ensuring natural drainage, thereby maintaining increasingly fragile water balances in the region.
The Orbieu terraces, with lighter soils, allow for the production of the estate’s softer, fruit-driven cuvées. Particular care is devoted to the vineyard: preserving hedgerows between plots helps maintain biological balance. In the cellar, the team favors fruit expression through gentle winemaking choices: they handle the grapes by gravity whenever possible, encourage indigenous yeasts, and use sulfur sparingly.
The meticulous attention of the Joyeux family results in wines of exceptional quality, produced in facilities of rare modernity in the Corbières. None of the red wines tasted at the estate “rolled their R’s”—an old expression used to describe the astringent character sometimes found in Corbières wines, where tannins scratch the back of the throat. This trait, still unfortunately present in the appellation, does not apply here: La Cendrillon’s wines are defined by smooth, rounded tannins.
