Château Gazin, a made-to-measure Pomerol

Years have passed since Château Gazin, the property of the legendary plateau, was handed down to the de Bailliencourt family. Confident vision, precise gestures, beautifully mastered.

Facing Petrus, Gazin is one of the great estates on Pomerol’s legendary clay-gravel plateau, with its 24 hectares in a single block. In September 2018, the de Bailliencourt family celebrated one hundred years of winemaking here and are working hard to take this estate to the top of the appellation hierarchy. The arrival of Mickaël Obert as technical director at the end of 2005 kick-started a gentle process of change. “In agreement with the owners, I changed the harvest dates to ensure that the grapes ripened just right. In terms of vinification, the grape varieties have been separated and I’ve subdivided the plots to be more precise. The plantings give pride of place to Merlot, which now accounts for 90% of the grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon now accounts for just 7% and Cabernet Franc just 3%. We are going to replant these two grape varieties on the plot in front of the château”. Here, we only use organic fertilisers and adapt the trellising to the vintage.
