THE WINE INDUSTRY is certainly right to sound the alarm. And not just because it’s bearing the brunt of the ferocious rise in energy and raw material prices, coupled with a serious fear of running out of bottles. The figures are there: wine consumption of all origins is falling in volume and even in value, with the possible exception of rosés, which are benefiting from the warmer weather. Around 8% in volume, 4% in value. The post-covid boom is over. The misleading rhetoric of the health lobby is starting to scare people. One might imagine that the reputation and expertise that are the pride of our great wine producers would help the future of all the others,
